First, Mobile County, now the City of Mobile.
The Mobile City Council Tuesday approved giving Airbus $4 million in incentive money over ten years for the company’s new assembly line for A220 aircraft at the Brookley Aeroplex.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new line are set for Wednesday.
Dignitaries from around the world are coming to Mobile for the ceremony, and smaller businesses already at Brookley are hoping this will mean more money for them as well.
The heavy equipment is already moving ground and tents have been set up for Wednesday’s groundbreaking right across from the present assembly line.
Tuesday morning, the Mobile City Council voted 6 to 0, with one member absent, to approve giving Airbus $4 million dollars over ten years in incentive money to build the new assembly line.
It’s tied to measurable achievements by Airbus, including a $210 million capital facilities investment and the hiring of 432 new employees.
But is the deal a good one for taxpayers?
Mayor Sandy Stimpson thinks so and says Mobile will become one of the worlds largest aviation construction centers for large aircraft.
Stimpson said, “We will follow Toulouse, France; Hamburg, Germany; Seattle, Washington; and Mobile. So just think of the job opportunities that are there.”
Mobile City Council Member Fred Richardson said, “At the end of this process, we’re going to be producing something like 50 airlines at $175 million dollars each.”
As Airbus gets ready to grow, new businesses are joining established ones at Brookley and there’s anticipation about what the new facility will mean for business and life style in the area.
Leanna Raley works at Papa Buddha’s and said, “It can mean that we have good business coming for everybody, not only just us, but everybody else, and its great. I like it. I think its good.”
Thomas Cayton from Mobile said, “This is going to bring the economy up and everything, you know, for everybody. That will be awesome.”
The Mobile County Commission Monday also approved $4 million over ten years in incentive money.
The state of Alabama is also expected to approve incentives, but there have been no figures on that yet.
