The Cabinet has approved the proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena with the aim of declaring Theravada Buddhist Tripitaka as a World Heritage.

The national ceremony to declare Theravada Buddhist Tripitaka as a national heritage was held under the patronage of the President at the historic Aluvihare temple in Matale on January 05, 2019.

According to a statement made by the President during that event, that he will do the necessary interventions to declare the Tripitaka as world heritage in a similar manner as it was declared as a national heritage, the proposal in this regard was presented to the Cabinet by President Sirisena.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approval was received in this regard, today (14) and it is scheduled to be presented in the Parliament and obtain approval in the near future.

Meanwhile, a discussion to apprise the diplomats regarding the declaration of Tripitaka as a world heritage was held under the patronage of Secretary to the President Mr. Udaya R. Senevirathne at the Presidential Secretariat, today.

Diplomats representing 14 Theravada Buddhist countries were participated on this occasion and during this event they commended the efforts taken by President Sirisena to declare Theravada Buddhist Tripitaka as a world heritage.

Furthermore, they pledged to provide their fullest support to achieve success in this effort.
