A study has confirmed dumping of industrial waste into Ludhiana city sewers. The three sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the city don’t have the capacity to handle the daily load. Untreated sewage, therefore, continues to flow into Buddha nullah.

Findings of the Department of Local Government indicate that owners of industrial units have manipulated timings of dumping waste into sewers once the domestic flow gets reduced after morning and evening hours.

The result: The chemical oxygen demand (COD) reading has been recorded at 1,100-1,200 although the figure in case of domestic waste should not be more than 500.

The survey was conducted by a team led by Chief Engineer Daljit Singh. The sewer flow was found to be around 780 million litres a day (MLD) against the expected flow of 460 MLD. The report was compiled based on data collected from six locations in the city, including Jalandhar bypass at Samrala Chowk, Transport Nagar, Gau Ghat, V ijay Dharm Kanda, Baloke and Jamalpur, in November 2018.

Said to be one of the biggest defaulters in releasing untreated waste into sewers, the dyeing industry has termed the report as baseless. An office-bearer of the Ludhiana Dyeing Units Association said, “The sewerage in the city is ill-equipped to take the daily load. Due to this, the department releases untreated sewage at certain points.”

Association president Avtar Makkar, said, “We have submitted a report to the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) claiming that almost all 260 dyeing units are releasing only treated waste into sewers. There is a need to examine the case of over 10,000 hosiery units that have been operating from residential areas and releasing untreated waste into drains. There are lakhs of cows and buffaloes at various dairy units, which dump untreated animal waste into sewers. Even the cycle and sewing machine units also release nickel and chrome waste into sewers.”

A local government officer said, “Our findings indicate that industrial waste is being dumped into sewers at night. The pollution control board is working on installing a central treatment plant for the industry. Big industrial units are expected to install zero capacity discharge plants this year.”
