Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday pushed for National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal and accused the state’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party Trinamool Congress of misleading people on the matter.

In a bid to allay fear among the people over the matter, the BJP president assured that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will be passed before the NRC is implemented in West Bengal to accord Indian citizenship to all Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist refugees.

While addressing a seminar on the controversial NRC, which has so far limited to Assam, Shah said: “People of Bengal are being misled about the NRC… I assure all Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain refugees they won’t have to leave the country, they will get Indian citizenship and enjoy all the rights of an Indian national.”

Underlining that the NRC is “a must” for national security, Shah declared that all infiltrators will be thrown out of the country.

“People of Bengal are being misled on the issue of NRC. I am here today to clear all doubts on the BJP’s stand…Mamata di is saying that millions of Hindus will have to leave West Bengal. There cannot be a bigger lie than this.”

“I want to assure the people of Bengal NRC will be implemented but nothing of this sort is going to happen. I assure all Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain refugees they won’t have to leave the country, they will get Indian citizenship and enjoy all the rights of an Indian national,” Shah added.

He asserted that infiltrators will be thrown out of India. “Kisi sharanarthi ko jaane nahin denge, kisi ghuspaithiye ko rahne nahin denge (No refugee will have to go, no infiltrator will be allowed to live). We will expel each one of them,” he said.

“No country in the world can run smoothly while carrying the burden of so many intruders. This has to stop. We are working towards changing Bengal. NRC is a must. We will have to implement NRC to ensure the country’s safety and security,” Shah added.

Notably, Mamata Banerjee has been almost daily referring to the NRC issue as a BJP propaganda that has “made people panicky”.

The BJP president further praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for abrogating provisions of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the move will lead to the state’s complete integration into India.

While talking about Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Shah said it was because of the sacrifices made by the Bhartiya Jana Sangh founder that West Bengal was today a part of the Indian republic.

He also exuded confidence that the BJP would win with the full majority in the next West Bengal Assembly Elections.

“The blood of BJP workers that has been shed in Bengal will not go in vain. You’ve given a chance to Communists, Congress and the Trinamool Congress. Now is the time to give a chance to the BJP to form the government and change West Bengal,” Shah said.

Earlier today, Trinamool Congress MLA Sabyasachi Dutta joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Amit Shah at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Dutta, who represents the Rajarhat New Town Assembly constituency, was handed over the party flag by West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh.
