In March 2020, Penguin Young Readers imprint Kokila will publish The Seed of Compassion: Lessons from the Life and Teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with illustrations by Bao Luu. The title, aimed at children ages four through eight, will include stories from the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Tibetan spiritual leader’s childhood in the Tibetan village Takster and path to becoming a Buddhist monk.

According to the publisher, the book’s message “inspires young readers to create a world that embraces all of humanity with an open heart.” It is the first children’s book by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatsu, who has authored multiple books for adults, including The Book of Joy, The Art of Happiness, Many Ways to Nirvana, and The Wisdom of Forgiveness.

In an interview, Namrata Tripathi, VP and Publisher of Kokila, said, “The Seed of Compassion is a window into the childhood of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as well as his first time writing for children. At its heart, the book is a conversation between His Holiness and the children of the world and a way for him to offer his belief that building a compassionate generation is already within us, beautifully rendered by debut illustrator Bao Luu.”

In a statement, Tripathi emphasized the timeliness of the book, stating, “As children and young people find themselves in an increasingly confusing world, it is such a gift for them to have direct guidance and encouragement from His Holiness about how they might bring more kindness to it.”

Kokila, which was launched in 2018 and published its first books in summer 2019, is “dedicated to centering stories from the margins.” Titles from the imprint include 2019 Newbery Honor-winning The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani, New York Times bestseller Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, My Papi Has a Motorcycle by Isabel Quintero, and Stand Up, Yumi Chang! by Jessica Kim, among others.

In an interview about the launch of Kokila, Tripathi told the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators that the imprint’s founding “came from a place of both optimism and frustration at the conversations that are happening in our industry, how much more we could be doing, and understanding that I could do more to open the doors wider on the stories we share with kids…The idea is that at Kokila diversity is reflected not just on the list, but in the creators, and also in the staff–the editors and art director–who touch each project.”
