KOLKATA Union home minister Amit Shah has said that the Centre would pass Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in Rajya Sabha first and then implement NRC. He said this in Kolkata on Tuesday.
“We will give citizenship rights to all refugees, including Matuas who have been thrown out from different countries. Refugees from other countries-—Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain, Christian— will never be forced to leave the country… They will be offered Indian citizenship,” he said, attempting to quell rumours suggesting otherwise. “I have come here to assure the refugees they need not worry. After this bill, they will have same rights as you and I,” he said.
In a scathing attack on the state’s chief minister, Shah said, “Mamata Banerjee has opposed Citizenship Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha and the MPs of TMC did not allow it to be passed the last time. But the situation has changed now. The Bill will be passed and the Centre is resolved to give citizenship to all refugees thrown out of different countries.” “People of Bengal have been provoked by those with vested interest,” Shah said.
