LUCKNOW: Having resigned from the primary membership of BJP earlier this months, sitting MP from Bahraich Savitribai Phule met Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Saturday setting off speculations of her joining the party.
Senior SP leaders present in the meeting confirmed that the two leaders had elaborate discussions on a host of issues, particularly the political scenario in state and beyond. While Phule was not available for comments, SP sources said that 2019 Lok Sabha elections wee discussed at length. After announcing her resignation from BJP, Phule had not ruled out the possibility of joining Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party before 2019 elections. She maintained that she is a follower of BSP founder Kanshiram and would “always work for the progress of Bahujan Samaj”.
Phule had been on a warpath with BJP for quite sometime and issued statements against the party line be it the issue of Jinnah’s portrait at Aligarh Muslim University, demanding Lord Buddha’s statue at the disputed site in Ayodhya instead of Ram temple and even accused her party of conspiring to do away with reservation policy before she quit the party on December 6, the death anniversary of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar.
