Dec 28, Colombo: Minister Sajith Premadasa has taken steps to conduct an immediate inquiry into the destruction of the Buddha statues at four places in Mawanella area.

Issuing a communiqué, the Minister says that steps have been taken to deploy officials of the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Archaeological Department for the investigation.

A group of miscreants have damaged the Buddha statues situated at the Randiwela junction, Miriskudu junction, Hingula Junction and lower Kadugannawa Indula junction.

Police have so far arrested nine suspects over the incident and further investigations are still ongoing.

Several officials under the supervision of Assistant Director of the Kegalle Archaeological Department HBAk Nimalgoda will join the investigation, the Minister said.

The initial investigations have indicated that the damaged Buddha statues do not possess an archaeological value.

However, Minister Sajith Premadasa emphasized that the importance and the need to restore the Buddha statues venerated by the people cannot be ignored.

The cost of restoration of the statues is already estimated and restoration will be completed within the next week, the Minister said.
