Thai Monk Killed, Four Novice Monks Injured in Tragic Songtaew Accident – Chiang Rai Times

A Buddhist monk has been killed and eight others injured after a mini bus pickup “songtaew” slid off the road and crashed. Phra Khru Baidika Theerasak was killed protecting fellow monks.

The incident occurred at the entrance to Khao Phra Kru Temple. Surasak Subdistrict, Si Racha District, Chon Buri Province. The accident happened while the songtaew travelling up a hill to the temple around 8 am, Monday.

Thai news media reported the vehicle lost control and crashed into an electricity pole. Sending the passengers 30 meters down an embankment adjacent to the road.

Phra Khru Baidika Theerasak Thammateeroh died at the scene, four novice monks were sent to a nearby hospital.

A fellow monk, tearfully said Phra Khru Baidika Theerasak had moved to stand at the rear of the truck to prevent the others from falling. Sadly causing him to be the first to be thrown out.

Phra Kru’s body was taken to Khao Phra Kru Temple where fellow monks will commence the bathing ceremony.

The police are now tracking down the driver, who of course, fled the accident scene.

Meanwhile, about 100 local residents in central Thailand have rallied to demand the removal of a senior monk. The calls come after a video posted on social media showed the monk hugging another man.

About 100 local worshipers to demonstrate outside Wat Chom Sri in Muang district in Phetchabun province the Bangkok Post reported.

The rally was held after a video clip aired showing the monk hugging a store manager and allegedly touching the other man’s groin. The shopkeeper later registered an indecency complaint against the monk, Phra Mitr, at the local police station.

Police who is handling the case, said they were gathering and examining evidence to substantiate the complaint.

Akkarachai Daipholthanya, director of the Provincial Buddhism Office, said a committee had been set up to look into the matter. It would need to talk to the monk, Phra Mirt, when he came back from Bangkok. When he would return was not known.
