Home Minister Amit Shah pushed the contentious issue of the National Register of Citizens at a rally in Kolkata on Tuesday. The state has remained on the fringe on the issue as it is believed to host a large population of Bangladeshi immigrants, who have been assured by the ruling TMC that they will not be thrown out.

However, pushing the central government’s agenda to identify illegal immigrants, Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah on Tuesday told the crowd at Netaji stadium in Kolkata that the state was being misled about the NRC.

“People of Bengal are being misled on the issue of NRC. I am here today to clarify and clear all doubts on BJP’s stand on the same,” Amit Shah said.

Amit Shah accused Mamata Banerjee of ‘spreading lies that millions of Hindus will have to leave West Bengal’ if NRC took place and assured the people that nothing of this sort would happen.

“I today want to assure Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Christian refugees, you will not be forced to leave India by the Centre,” Amit Shah said.

Will bring Citizenship Amendment Bill: Amit Shah

Amit Shah said that before NRC is introduced in West Bengal, the Centre will implement Citizenship Amendment Bill which will ensure that people who should get Indian Citizenship will get it.

“We had brought the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha, but the TMC MPs did not allow the Upper House to function. They did not allow the bill to be passed, and due to this, there are people in our country who are yet to get Indian citizenship,” he said.

“Mamata Di is saying she will not allow NRC to happen in Bengal. I’m telling you that we will not allow even a single intruder inside India. We will expel all of them,” Amit Shah added.

NRC a matter of national security: Amit Shah

Amit Shah told the rally in Kolkata that the NRC was a matter of national security as “no country in the world can run smoothly with the weight of so many intruders. This series has to stop. We are working towards changing Bengal.”

“We will have to implement NRC to ensure the country’s safety,” he said.

The home minister also accused Mamata Banerjee of showing dual standards on the issue with and without power. He accused the West Bengal chief minister of opposing the intruders as an opposition leader and protecting them once they became her vote bank.

“I want to remind Mamata Di of her speech on 4 Aug 2005 in which she had clearly talked about the ouster of intruders. Political ambitions should not prevail over national priorities,” Amit Shah said.

Amit Shah’s election push

BJP chief Amit Shah credited the people of West Bengal for increasing the party’s footprint in the state during the recent Lok Sabha elections and hoped that the BJP will make the next state government.

“The BJP has crossed the mark of 300 seats for the first time in the history of LS elections. The people of West Bengal have a major contribution in it. We had got just two seats in 2014, but today, we have 18 seats in West Bengal. We have received 40 per cent of the votes. Almost 2.5 crore Bengalis have voted for us,” Amit Shah said.

Claiming that the state of health care, crime and industries was poor in West Bengal, Amit Shah requested people to give BJP a chance.

You’ve given a chance to Communists, Congress and the Trinamool Congress. Now is the time to give a chance to the BJP to form the Govt and change the state of West Bengal,” he said.

Abrogation of Article 370 a tribute to Shyama Prasad Mookherji: Amit Shah

Amit Shah told the public that the abrogation of Article 370 was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tribute Shyama Prasad Mookherji, who hailed from Bengal.

“Bengal and Article 370 go back a long way in time because hailing from Bengal, Shyama Prasad Mookherji waged the first war against it, and gave his life for the abrogation of the Article. After 73 years, you gave us 18 seats, and in response, PM Modi abrogated Article 370 & 35A in the first session of the Parliament,” he said.

The BJP chef further added that West Bengal was part of India because of the efforts made by Shyama Prasad Mookherji. “Some people say that we are outsiders in Bengal. I want to tell such people that read history. During Partition, the entire Bengal was about to go to Pakistan. Then, it was our leader, Shyama Prasad Mookherji, who revolted and formed West Bengal. Today, if West Bengal is a part of the Union of India, it is the result of the revolt of Shyama Prasad Mookherji,” Amit Shah said.

“We believe that by removing Article 370, we have made Kashmir an integral part of India and PM Modi has given a true tribute to the sacrifice given by Shyama Prasad Mookherji,” he added.
