STANDARD GRAPHENE Inc, a high-end flake graphene producer headquartered in South Korea, celebrated the establishment of a water filtration plant at Lumbini, Nepal, well-known as the birthplace of the Buddha, on June 18th (local time) at the 10th School of the Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation (Shree Sundi School). The establishment was funded by the Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation.
The ceremony was attended by JoungHoon Lee (CEO of STANDARD GRAPHENE) and Executive Director Um Hong-Gil (Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation), as well as global leaders of graphene technology research, Sang-Ouk Kim (KAIST) and Mun-Seok Jeong (SeongKyunKwan University). The ceremony was also honored with the founder of the FutureTalks Foundation, Silje Marie Vallestad (Norway), and select students from Minerva Schools at KGI. About 700 students and teachers of the Shree Sundi School attended the ceremony.
The water filtration plant used a next-generation material called Super Graphite that has been developed from graphene manufacture technologies. The plant cleans the water through four filtration cycles, processing more than 1,000L of drinkable water per day. After multiple international tests, Super Graphite has been recognized to have a superior attraction to toxic materials and better filtration rates than conventional materials used for water filtration. Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, is one of the four holy places in the Buddist religion. The Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation established two schools in Lumbini, one on February 21st, 2012 (The 3rd Human School), and another on the February 19th, 2013 (The 10th Human School). The 10th Human School, where the water filtration system was constructed, educates about 700 students and has been in need of an efficient and safe drinkable water solution. This program built a combination of groundwater pumps, water tanks, and filtration systems, providing students with easy access to clean and safe drinkable water.
Um Hong-Gil, Executive Director of the Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation, commented “I am thankful that this historic ceremony has taken place at the holy site of Lumbini, home to the 10th Human School. I am thankful for the international scholars and opinion leaders who are here today whose interest and care has enabled the construction of this facility. More water filtration systems that use the water filtration materials developed by STANDARD GRAPHENE will be constructed in other Human School sites to bring clean and safe drinking water to Nepal students.” He also told the gathered students “Become the people who will contribute and volunteer for the development of Nepal. Grow up healthy by drinking clean water, and achieve your dreams. You are the dreams and hopes of Nepal. I wish that you will continuously venture out to achieve your dreams.”
JoungHoon Lee, CEO of STANDARD GRAPHENE, mentioned that “It took us a long time to get to where we are today. I had a dream once where every one of you was here today. My dream was to create a material that could provide clean water to places that needed it most. Today, I’m seeing that dream come true. I hope you will also see your dreams come true by growing up healthy by drinking clean water.”
The system is considered to be the world’s first mass scale filtration system developed by graphene technology. STANDARD GRAPHENE plans to provide graphene water filters to areas in need of water. STANDARD GRAPHENE has been building partnerships with governments, companies, and NGOs with water-lacking countries in North America, South America, Africa, and Asia. STANDARD GRAPHENE is also developing graphene technologies for oil mining, livestock farming, and wastewater treatment.
STANDARD GRAPHENE has just finalized raising USD$12m of its first institutional funding to extend the production lines and set up a Joint Venture. The company has built its first graphene mass production facilities in 2009. With 10 years of optimization process, STANDARD GRAPHENE is considered to be one of a few firms able to produce high-end flake graphene in the market.

- Captain Um Hong-Gil, the first person to climb all 8,000m+ peaks on Earth, established the Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation in 2008 to bring support to in-need families around the world. The foundation has provided medical assistance, financial support, and environmental protection programs to developing countries such as Nepal. The foundation has so far established 16 Human Schools in Nepal and has plans for the construction of dormitories.
- Minerva Schools at KGI is a next-generation educational institution based out of San Francisco. It is known for its 21-st century digital curriculum that takes students to 7 countries around the world through its 4-year program: the United States, South Korea, India, Germany, Argentina, United Kingdom, and Taipei. The students are educated on an experiential learning model, where applied knowledge is prioritized over memorized knowledge in digital interactive discussion-based classrooms with a student-to-professor ratio of 1:10.
- The FutureTalks Foundation is based out of Oslo, Norway, with the mission to provide interdisciplinary solutions to modern problems by a platform that connects leaders from around the globe. It is best known for hosting an Arctic Expedition in August 2018 that joined 100 world leaders for a one-week trip into the Arctic sea to discover the most important question of the era. The FutureTalks community is comprised of leaders in UN organizations, multinational companies, celebrities, and artists as well as young professionals and students.
