The St. Louis Park Unity Sing will bring diverse voices together 6:30-7:45 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Wat Promwachirayan, the Buddhist temple and southeast Asian cultural center at 2544 Hwy. 100 S. in St. Louis Park.

This free event will focus on the role of music and singing in the culture and worship of some of the community’s faith communities, including Wat Promwachirayan, Beth El Synagogue, Westwood Lutheran Church and Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School. In addition to hearing from these communities, all will have the opportunity to share in singing together from the Justice Choir Songbook, a resource to further social and environmental justice movements by engaging communities in singing together. Thai appetizers of cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and spring rolls will be served after the program. No singing experience is required.

This event celebrates and builds upon St. Louis Park’s history as an open and inclusive community. In the 1940s, as many were moving out of Minneapolis and into suburbs, St. Louis Park, unlike many suburbs at the time, did not have any restrictions against Jewish access to housing, and many Jewish people from North Minneapolis found their new homes in St. Louis Park. In the 1970s, the Social Action Committee from Westwood Lutheran Church urged the public school district to change the name of “Christmas Vacation” to “Winter Vacation” to be more inclusive of their Jewish neighbors and asked the city to officially recognize Jewish holidays. Voices Together: The St. Louis Park Unity Sing is an opportunity to meet and share in community and song with neighbors of different faiths and cultural backgrounds and continue the tradition of inclusivity.

This event is produced by St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to building community through the arts.
