Bangkok – His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua has changed the Emerald Buddha’s summer season attire to mark the beginning of the rainy season.

His Majesty and Queen Suthida proceeded to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha within the precincts of the Grand Palace in Bangkok on Wednesday to perform the ceremony and were accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati.

The King removed the crown from the Emerald Buddha and cleaned the image with holy water from a royal conch shell. His Majesty then dabbed the Emerald Buddha with a clean white cloth and placed a headpiece on the deity.

Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakon, or the Emerald Buddha, is considered the palladium of the Kingdom of Thailand. The holy image is dressed in seasonal costumes. In this sacred and auspicious ritual that has been practiced by the monarchs of the Chakri dynasty, the attire of the Emerald Buddha is changed three times annually to correspond to the summer, rainy and winter seasons of Thailand. The ceremony falls on the first day of the fourth, eighth and twelfth lunar months.

For the rainy season, the Emerald Buddha wears a gold-plated monk’s robe with a pointed-headpiece of enameled gold studded with sapphires.

Lent Day is an important date in the Buddhist calendar, which begins from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month to the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 11th lunar month. Buddhist monks will remain in their temples to learn and practice Dhamma during the three-month period and many people will make merit during this time of the year.
