Imran Khan’s address at UNGA had four basic elements – bewailing, bluster, bravado and bluff. He began as suitor scorned, lamenting the callous cold-shoulder he received from Narendra Modi in response to all the overtures he made. The underlying accusation hinted at was that Modi purposely and intentionally ignored the olive branch.

Imran had the advantage of speaking later and most probably wanted to unmask the holier than thou attitude of Modi who had to try to put on a face of preacher, waxing eloquent on Indian culture and ancient precept of Vedic literature. The difference between the content, tone and tenor of the two speeches was evident. One a professional politician adept at sidestepping the real issues making high decibel noise for non-issues and posing as a rational thinker while plagiarising. The other a greenhorn accidental politician, a cricketer trying to play by the rules with a straight bat and beaten by the googlies of a wily professional. Having failed to bat for his country Imran resorted to his forte – bodyline bowling, beamers, bumpers, toe-breakers and swinging both ways.

The venom he spewed was as caustic and acidic as our leaders spit when referring to their opponents during election rallies in India. First, he accused Modi of blaming Pakistan for Pulwama terror attack without an iota of evidence and then attacking Balakot and making a plank for 2019 elections in India. In other words, he accused Modi of purposely creating a hostile atmosphere in the neighbourhood with the ulterior motive of polarising communal extremist voters in India.

After berating the child for being a truant and bully he next criticised his upbringing and parenting. According to the Pakistan PM, the agenda of communal divide and two-nation theory was introduced in the Indian polity by organisations like Hindu Mahasabha and ideologues like Savarkar and Golwlalkar a century ago which ultimately lead to the partition of the country and even Gandhiji’s murder by a Hindu extremist.

He pointed out that Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League were brothers in arms in propagating communal politics and communal divide. He pointed out that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Fazlul Haq joined hands to form a government in the then Bengal with former being deputy to the latter.

Proceeding from ridiculous to absurd Khan floated the theory that it is the education and training in RSS that has made Modi what he is – communal and anti-Muslim. According to him he obtained political clout and hold in Indian politics by organising Godhra pogrom. Little did Imran Khan realise that Modi ruled the hearts of electorate after being three-term CM he is now in his second term as PM.

In a desperate move and as the last resort, he rolled the Kashmir dice and played the Muslim card. According to the limited understanding of the new Messiah, Modi is discriminating against the people of Kashmir because they are Muslim. Due to this Muslims all over the world and also in India will rise and there will be a bloodbath. He very conveniently forgot how minorities are being treated in Pakistan and the Muslim population in Baluchistan is being discriminated attack by a Pakistani Muslim army.

What raised Imran’s hackles most was Modi’s assertion that in the last five years he has reaffirmed and re-established the primacy of the 5,000-year-old Indian culture. Imran realised that the period goes back before even Buddha, whom Modi referred to be against Yuddha

It clearly referred to the age of classic Hindu culture. This provoked Imran to call for Jihad against Hindu race by the Muslim race. Imran, an anglophile, with limited knowledge of Indian history did not know that before the advent of Islam, the whole of the Indian subcontinent and even Southeast Asia from Bamiyan to Borobudur was Buddhist and Hindu The Indian Hindus and Muslims like Imran belong to the same “Race” It is unfortunate that in his misdirected and uninformed zeal to attack Modi and RSS, Imran tarred all the Hindus and Indians with the same communal and divisive brush.

Like a seasoned politician, Modi couched his inanities and empty slogans in high-sounding bombastic phrases meaning nothing and saying a lot posing as a world leader. Imran sounded pedestrian using an international platform to give vent to the regional rift.

The contrasting contents and style of the two leaders clearly showed and reflected the similarity in the approach both being super-nationalists, on the verge of jingoism, drawing their strength from communal divide still persisting even after 70 years of partition, adding fuel to the strong fire of hatred to keep their political hearth warm.

Obviously, Modi’s masterful performance must be an object lesson in referring to enemies without a name and saying nothing while talking a lot and meaning nothing even by promising a lot.

On the whole, UNGA was a learning lesson for an accidental novice and a teaching a class by the master of political doublespeak. Maybe when he retires at 75 and is kicked upstairs to BJP’s mookdarshak mandal he will guide and coach future politicians to lead the party and mislead the people. The only dejection about the whole episode for PM would have been attendance or lack of it at UNGA, after the high of Howdy Modi. This is the difference between a paid audience and voluntary attendance.

Imran most probably doesn’t know or realise that in the last general elections more people in India voted against BJP than for it. Majority of Indians are peace-loving and secular, do not want religious strife and want to live in peace with their neighbours.
