First Religious Society

On Sunday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist, Newburyport, the Rev. Rebecca Bryan will preach on “I Don’t Pray” during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. service. She will share her understanding of prayer and how it is helpful in her life.

Old South First Presbyterian

Old South First Presbyterian Church, 29 Federal St., Newburyport, is led by the Rev. Insight Meditation

The Insight Meditation Center of Newburyport offers “Mindfulness Yoga and Insight Meditation” will be offered Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This workshop explores how to create continuity between practice on the yoga mat and practice on the meditation cushion. It includes short periods of sitting meditation, yoga and discussion. Beginners and experienced students are welcome. This is designed for anyone interested in learning insight meditation, or Vipassana.

Belleville Congregational

The Rev. Ross Varney of Belleville Congregational Church, 300 High St., Newburyport, leads worship at 10 a.m. each Sunday in the chapel.

Children experience a mixture of worship with family and classroom time. Refreshments and fellowship follow the service. The thrift shop is usually open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, but is closed in January to clean, reorganize and restock. Amesbury Quakers

Amesbury Quakers (Friends) meet every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. at 120 Friend St. in an unprogrammed meeting for worship. There is no officiant.

The service consists of contemplative silence with occasional spoken ministry. Child care is available. After the service ends, the group gathers for refreshments and conversation as well as planned discussions. Monthly potluck dinners are held the third Friday of every month.

A workshop, “Exploring the Quaker Way,” will be offered Sunday, Jan. 27, and Sunday, Feb. 3, from noon to 3 p.m. This two-part workshop explores Quaker practice, history and prophecy, including how people such as Margaret Fell and Bayard Rustin have transformed their lives.

Facilitators will be Minga Claggett-Borne, who leads Quaker nonviolence workshops and travels in the ministry, and Patricia Wild, a writer who leads Quaker forums and clearness committees. Both worship at Friends Meeting at Cambridge.

First Church of Christ, Scientist

First Church of Christ, Scientist, 22 Inn St., Newburyport, presents its weekly Bible lesson, “Life,” on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m.

The lesson will consist of texts from the Old and New testaments with related passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy. Child care is available for babies and toddlers. Sunday School for children and teens is held at the same hour. Younger students learn Bible stories, the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount, while those in more advanced classes build on these early lessons and discuss how they are applicable to their own lives.

Wednesday evening meetings are from 7:30 to 8:30, with members and visitors sharing their gratitude for healings they received through Christian Science. The Christian Science Reading Room, also at 22 Inn St., is a bookstore offering Bibles, Bible translations and reference books, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” and other works by Mary Baker Eddy, and magazines with examples of contemporary spiritual healing. The Spiritual Breakfast Club hosts the Spiritual Breakfast Gathering on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Newburyport Public Library, 94 State St.

The continental breakfast, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., includes hearing briefly about the seven-year experiences of the club members and then having an open, nonjudgmental discussion about spirituality as it relates to everyday life.
