Old South FirstPresbyterian

Old South First Presbyterian Church, 29 Federal St., Newburyport, is led by the Rev. Sara Singleton, and presents a Sunday service at 10 a.m. and fellowship hour at 11 a.m.

The sermon series, “Finding God in Unexpected Places,” continues July 21 with the sermon “What is Strange About the Christmas Story?” by Singleton.

Soup and sandwiches will be served to neighbors in need at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Men’s fellowship is offered the second and fourth Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at The Port Tavern.

People are invited to the church on Thursdays at 11 a.m. for a time of prayer leading to loving action toward God and neighbors.

This summer, Kimberly Fick leads a discovery Bible study of the Gospel of Mark, a book that tells about the beginning of good news. The Strawberry/Blueberry Dessert Festival will be held as part of Yankee Homecoming on Sunday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Immaculate Conception lawn. Homemade shortcake with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream will be served for $5 along with bottled water. Proceeds benefit the collaborative’s ministries. Since Yankee Homecoming’s theme is “Remembering our Past,” a “A Brief History of Our Collaborative” and tours of Immaculate Conception will be available at the festival.

The church is selling 300 raffle tickets for a three-night stay through Houseboats at Newburyport (www.houseboatsatnewburyport.com). Tickets: $10 each or five for $40. East ParishUnited Methodist

East Parish United Methodist Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Salisbury, offers a worship service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 21.

Volunteers with musical talent are invited to sign up to present musical selections during the service as part of Special Summer Sundays.

For the rest of the summer with weather permitting, Fellowship Light — featuring coffee and lemonade — will follow worship in front of the church from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

The Rev. Charlottee Hendee’s schedule changed Wednesday, July 10. She will be in the office and make visits as needed on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 2 or 3 p.m. The schedule may occasionally need to be adjusted. Her drop-in hour at Dunkin’ Donuts is now Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m., although she may switch to another location.

Each month, the church collects items for The Pettengill House food pantry and community members can participate. The program is also open to community members who wish to participate.

First Parish Church

Child care provided for infants and toddlers during worship as is Sunday school for children in prekindergarten through middle school. Bible study group meets the second and fourth Sundays of each month in the downstairs hall at 8:30 a.m. Newcomers welcome. Food pantry is open from 3 to 5 p.m. each Friday for anyone in need of food.

Bible study group resumes in the fall. No worship services at First Parish in July. Services will be at Belleville Congregational Church, 300 High Road, Newburyport. Worship returns to First Parish on Aug. 4. All services in July and August begin at 9:30 a.m.

First Church ofChrist, Scientist

First Church of Christ, Scientist, 22 Inn St., Newburyport, presents its weekly Bible lesson on Sunday, July 21, at 10 a.m.

The lesson will consist of texts from the Old and New testaments with related passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy. Child care is available for babies and toddlers. Sunday School for children and teens is held at the same hour. Younger students learn Bible stories, the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount, while those in more advanced classes build on these early lessons and discuss how they are applicable to their own lives.

Wednesday evening meetings are from 7:30 to 8:30, with members and visitors sharing their gratitude for healings they received through Christian Science. The Christian Science Reading Room, also at 22 Inn St., is a bookstore offering Bibles, Bible translations and reference books, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” and other works by Mary Baker Eddy, and magazines with examples of contemporary spiritual healing. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

First ReligiousSociety

The First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist, Newburyport, led by the Rev. Rebecca Bryan, does not hold worship services during the summer.

But a Unitarian Universalist service is held Sundays at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Society, 143 Exeter Road, in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire.

Summer office hours in Newburyport run through Sept. 8, Tuesday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon.

Amesbury Quakers (Friends) meet every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. at 120 Friend St. in an unprogrammed meeting for worship. There is no officiant.

The service consists of contemplative silence with occasional spoken ministry. Child care is available. After the service ends, the group gathers for refreshments and conversation as well as planned discussions. Monthly potluck dinners are held the third Friday of every month.

People’s UnitedMethodist Church

People’s United Methodist, 64 Purchase St., Newburyport, offers music and worship for adults and children Sundays at 9 a.m. led by Pastor Matt Willis-Goode.

Food and fellowship following the service at Hartson Hall is on hold until September. Every second Sunday, the church collects food and monetary donations for the Newbury Food Pantry. Being a church member is not required to participate.

In July, Gail Rowinski is collecting donations for backpacks with supplies and for brown bag lunches to help veterans and the homeless who attend the lunch at GAR Park in Haverhill every Friday at 1 p.m. Contact Rowinski at 978-270-1641 for more information, the list of items needed, or to volunteer for distribution. Church membership is not required to participate.

Tuesdays at 9 a.m. is Seniors Coffee Group. The Angel Gabriel Quilters and Knitters meet Tuesdays at 1 p.m.

Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. is an 11th step meditation meeting, 7 to 8 p.m. is an Emotions Anonymous meeting. EA helps people learn to live at peace despite difficulties in their daily lives.

This is a peer-led group that educates its members and local residents about Buddhist ideas and practices.
