First ReligiousSociety

“Joy: Evidence of the Divine?” will be the Rev. Rebecca Bryan’s sermon Sunday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist, Newburyport.

There are fundamental differences between happiness and joy, though both are pleasant. Bryan will raise the question of whether people can be happy and not feel joy or experience joy and not feel happy? She will also ask what conditions are necessary for joy and happiness, and how many are really in one’s control?

Wednesday, June 5, will be the jazz vespers service at 8 p.m., the last before summer break. Bryan will present readings and the music features the Pocket Big Band. Jazz vespers celebrates the inspiration of jazz, swing and blues music, and offers readings and time for silent reflection.

The annual meeting Sunday, June 9, will be a time to celebrate the congregation’s successful annual campaign, affirm its faith and build for the future. Members will gather after the service to vote on items made possible by this year’s fundraising.

Union Congregational

Union Congregational Church, 350 Main St., Point Shore, Amesbury, led by the Rev. Lucy Blood, offers a Sunday service at 10 a.m. Coffee hour is at 11 a.m.

All-you-can-eat spaghetti suppers are the fourth Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $8 per person, takeout for $9 and $28 for families. Proceeds go toward the meetinghouse. First Parish Church

Worship is at 10 a.m. on Sunday at First Parish Church of Newbury, 20 High Road.

Child care provided for infants and toddlers during worship as is Sunday school for children in prekindergarten through middle school. Bible study group meets the second and fourth Sundays of each month, including June 9, in the downstairs hall at 8:30 a.m. Newcomers welcome.

Food pantry is open from 3 to 5 p.m. each Friday for anyone in need of food. The annual meeting will be after worship Sunday, June 16.

The Death Café will be held at First Parish Burying Ground on Monday, June 17, at 6 p.m. Rachel Meyer of Epoch Preservation will lead a tour. Participants will see current restoration projects as well as historic gravesites. Fefreshments and conversation following the tour. In case of rain, the Café will be held downstairs at the church. Amesbury Councilof Churches

The Amesbury Council of Churches is accepting nominations for its Layperson of the Year award.

Nominees must have made a substantial contribution to the life and ministry of their Amesbury church or the Amesbury Council of Churches and the community.

People’s UnitedMethodist Church
