Groveland Congregational

Groveland Congregational Church, 4 King St., Groveland, offers a Sunday service at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m., the public is invited to a candlelight meditation service modeled after services in the Taizé community of France. Taizé prayer is a simple form of ecumenical Christian prayer centered on scripture, silence and song. It involves singing and listening to the word of God in an atmosphere of silence and peace. The music consists of simple repeated refrains, and there will be readings from scripture, petitions and a time of silent prayer.

The theme for this month is “God’s Loving Care through All the Seasons of Our Lives.”

First Religious Society

The First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist, Newburyport, offers a Sunday service on Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m.

The service will offer reflections from 9 teenagers and five adults from the church who traveled in June to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for a justice learning and service trip.

The Rev. Rebecca Bryan preaches on “The Powerful Question” on Sunday, Oct. 6, exploring how clarity of purpose allows people to create meaning in their lives.

Buddhist meditation continues at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays. Enter from the church’s parking lot side. First timers should come at 6 p.m.

The church’s first jazz vespers of the year kicks off Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in the sanctuary. The service blends spoken word and jazz music by the Vespers House band. The event celebrates the inspiration of jazz, swing and blues music, and offers readings and time for silent reflection. Jazz vespers are held on the first Wednesday of the month from October to December and then February to June.

On Friday, Oct. 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m, the Climate Action Project hosts a potluck dinner with presentations by Extinction Rebellion and Citizens Climate Lobby in the Lower Meetinghouse. All are welcome. Bring food and beverages to share.

East Parish United Methodist

East Parish United Methodist Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Salisbury, offers a community breakfast Sunday, Sept. 29, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Rose Room to celebrate Salisbury Days. Cost is $6 per person or $20 for a family of four.

The congregation gathers at 10 a.m. for a hymn sing to welcome the Rev. Charlotte Hendee back from her Alaskan vacation. The choir has resumed rehearsals every Sunday from 9 to 10 a.m. Hendee will be in the office and make visits as needed on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 2 or 3 p.m. Her drop-in hours resume Oct. 2 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pat’s Diner in Salisbury.

Each month, the church collects items for The Pettengill House food pantry and community members can participate. Lunch snacks, school supplies and socks will be collected this month. Items are being collected throughout September and will be delivered the first week of October. The program is also open to community members who wish to participate.

The lesson will consist of texts from the Old and New testaments with related passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy.
