Theatre review: This is a Funeral of Your Life
Designed by Lian Bell, the set of This is a Funeral of Your Life replicates a crematorium so authentically that the man beside me snorted wryly when the “fire exit” announcement was made at the start. This immersive production, created and directed by Louise White, eschews traditional narrative to explore the rituals of death. It has three, blackly comic performers: dancer Philip Connaughton, singer Michelle O’Rourke and assured actor Lucy Cray-Miller. While Cray-Miller steers us through a corpse-less funeral with an amusing deadpan bossiness, Connaughton does a beguiling dance of death and O’Rourke perches behind her electric keyboard belting out funeral hits. Inviting audience participation, we are prodded to examine our consciences and raise our hands…
